The issue of homelessness is so huge, it can seem overwhelming. Probably the most important thing we can do to help end homelessness, is to educate people and change public opinion about homelessness. The more people know about homelessness, the more likely they are to help eliminate the causes.

Find out what your local shelter needs and donate items. (Go to our "If You're Homeless" page, or "Local Coalitions" page.)

Tutor a homeless child.

Donate money to a local shelter, housing or homelessness prevention program.

Ask your state legislators to support funding for homelessness and affordable housing programs.

Find out what your local government is doing about affordable housing and homelessness.

Volunteer in a service agency.

De-objectify homeless people. They are not "the homeless" but people who do not have a stable place to live.

Meet and get to know someone who is without a home.

Buy products made or sold by people without housing.

Act politically: write a politician, cast an informed ballot.

Educate yourself about what causes the loss of housing, especially in this community.

Reflect on your own situation, "Do I have resources to cover my rent or mortgage in the event of illness, an accident, or the loss of a loved one?"

Give a donation to a homeless housing program in your community.
